Taxicab Scams
The Peterborough Police Service is issuing a warning after multiple reports of a scam involving a fake taxi.
The scam involves a person asking the victim to help them pay for their taxi fare. When the good Samaritan helps out and enters their PIN into the card reader, they are then distracted, and the victim’s card is swapped out for a fake card. The suspects then leave the area with the original card and the PIN number. The incidents are happening outside of businesses.
Officers are investigating and anyone with information is asked to call Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
U-Haul Van Scam
The Peterborough Police Service is investigating after receiving reports of U-Haul vans not being returned at the designated time. Through investigation it is believed that individuals are using the vans to drive around neighbourhoods and steal from residential properties.

Robbery Suspect Sought - Update
The Peterborough Police Service would like to thank the public for their assistance in connection with a suspect wanted after a robbery earlier this week.
The suspect has been identified and a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

Theft of Motor Vehicle Arrest
A 35-year-old Peterborough man is facing several charges after an incident in Peterborough Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 12:50pm on June 20, 2024, officers were called to Hunter Street East after a man reported being threatened with a wooden hockey stick before the man fled into a wooded area. About an hour later, another call for service came in reporting that a man matching the description given to police had just jumped out in front of a delivery van and smashed the passenger window with the hockey stick. When the driver jumped out to try to talk to the man; he was struck in the leg with the hockey stick. The suspect then got into the vehicle and drove away. Officers located the van in the Maria Street and Armour Road area and were told that the driver had run into the wooded area. They gave chase on foot and noticed a man with a hockey stick matching the description in a parking lot. The man continued to swing the stick at officers. One officer deployed their Conducted Energy Weapon and the suspect was taken into custody.
As a result of the investigation, a 35-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:
- Assault with A Weapon
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Mischief Under $5,000
- Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest
- Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm
The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court today, June 21, 2024.
