Fraud – Taylor Swift Concert Tickets
The Peterborough Police Service is issuing a warning to the public after several reports have been made about fraud involving tickets to the Taylor Swift concerts.
In the past few weeks, four reports have been made about fraudulent sales of tickets for the upcoming concerts. The frauds have occurred through Facebook groups or Facebook Marketplace and total almost $6000. In each case, a payment was made and then the “seller” either blocks or deletes their account leaving the buyer without their money or tickets.
“Sadly, we see these types of frauds increase in relation to events such as high-profile concerts that are sold out,” says Detective Constable Ryan Black, Fraud Unit. “We ask people to be extra cautious, especially if a sale or offer seems too good to be true.”
The Peterborough Police Fraud Unit also reminds people to be extra cautious about purchasing items through online means such as Facebook, Kijiji, etc. Always try to exchange items and money in a public space and never meet anybody alone.
If you are the victim of a fraud you can report it to Peterborough Police through 9-1-1 (if it is an emergency situation), the non-emergency line 705-876-1122 or the online reporting portal https://www.peterboroughpolice.com/en/report/report.aspx
Warrant Arrest
A 36-year-old Lakefield man wanted on warrants has been arrested and is also facing new charges.
At approximately 6:30pm on October 24, 2023, officers on bike patrol on the TransCanada Trail near Reid Street and McDonnel Street spotted a man wanted on warrants for seven counts of theft under $5000, failing to attend court and mischief under $5000 X2. The officer approached the man and was given a false name. Officers were able to confirm his real identity and he was taken into custody.
As a result, a 36-year-old Lakefield man was arrested on the strength of the warrants and also charged with:
- Obstruct peace officer (for providing a false name)
Through further investigation it was determined that the suspect was connected to several shoplifting incidents and a fraud incident that were reported online in August and September 2023.
He was further charged with:
- Theft under $5000 x 4
- Use of Credit Card
The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court today, October 25, 2023.
