Grandparent Scam
After a spate of reports of the Grandparent Scam circulating recently, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has released numbers with regard to the scam. In 2022, $5.4M was reported lost to emergency scams such as the grandparent scam in Ontario.
Earlier this year Peterborough Police received numerous calls about the scam, taking reports about residents who had received phone calls and those calling to report that money was exchanged.
In one of the most recent calls at the end of January, it was reported that a local resident lost $15,000.
The Peterborough Police Service continues to remind residents to talk to their family members and their networks about the scam to raise awareness.
Here’s Detective Constable Ryan Black of Fraud Unit with more information on how you can protect yourself and your neighbourhood.
