Fraud Arrest
A 22-year-old Boston, MA, USA man is facing fraud charges in connection with a rental scam in Peterborough.
On June 10, 2024, the Peterborough Police Fraud Unit was made aware of two reported incidents of fraud through a rental scam. In each case, the victim was responding to an ad for an apartment on Facebook Marketplace. They were given a tour of the apartment in the Brock Street and Reid Street area and were convinced to send around $1000 each to secure the same apartment. Once the payment was made there was no more contact from the potential landlord and the victims were never given access to the apartment. Officers attended the apartment, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
As a result of the investigation, 22-year-old Nigel Chiwara was arrested and charged with:
- Fraud Under $5,000 X2
The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court July 23, 2024.
The Peterborough Police Service is releasing the suspect’s name in this case as it is believed there are more victims.

Weapons Arrest
A 31-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges after an incident Wednesday morning.
At approximately 6:00am on June 12, 2024, officers were called to the area of Park Street North and Albert Street after a man reported having a knife and a hammer brandished at him as well as being verbally threatened. Upon arrival, the officers located a man matching the description given to police a short distance away. One officer drew their Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), and the man was taken into custody without incident.
Through investigation it was learned that the suspect had been in an earlier confrontation with another man about some property that was taken from a nearby residence. When officers searched a bin of items that the suspect had with them, property from two reported theft incidents was located. Then at the station, a resident came in to report that a shed attached to his residence had been broken into and several items had been taken. Those items were located in the bin that had been with the suspect. Also found in the bin were a knife and a hammer.
As a result, a 31-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:
- Uttering Threats - Cause death or Bodily Harm
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 - in Canada X3
- Theft Under $5000 X2
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order X3
- Break, Enter a place - commit indictable offence
The accused is currently bound by a probation with the following conditions to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and to not possess any weapon as defined by the Criminal Code.
The accused was held in custody and appeared in court June 12, 2024.
