Fraud Attempt
The Peterborough Police Service is warning the residents and business owners about another scam.
Recently a local business reported they had received a call from someone claiming to be from Hydro One, that several payments had not been received and that the business’ power was going to be cut if a payment wasn’t made. The caller asked payment was to be made at a different location and stated that it could not be done over the phone. The business owner became suspicious, called Hydro One directly and discovered this was a scam. No money was exchanged.
Tips to Avoid Frauds/Scams:
DO:
✔️ Take the time to check the story; be suspicious of an urgent call to action
✔️ Discuss what you’re being asked to do with someone else
✔️ Be suspicious of unsolicited calls or messages – if you receive one hang up or delete the message without opening it
DO NOT:
❌ Do not send money if you’re not sure
❌ Do not share any type of personal/business information over the phone, through electronic messages such as email or text if you’re not sure
