Grandparent Scam Arrest
A 26-year-old Hamilton man has been charged in connection with a Grandparent Scam incident in January.
On January 23, 2023, a resident was contacted and told their grandson had been arrested. $18,000 was exchanged before it was learned it was a scam. Through investigation by the Fraud Unit the suspect was identified and on Thursday, February 16, 2023, he turned himself in to Peterborough Police.
As a result, 26-year-old Mohamed Mahmood of Hamilton was arrested and charged with:
- Extortion
- Fraud over $5000
- Possession of proceeds of crime under $5000
The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court March 8, 2023.
Peterborough Police Service is releasing the name as there may be more victims in connection with the significant number of calls in January connected to the Grandparent Scam.
Warrant Arrest
A 50-year-old Ajax man has been arrested in connection with a robbery and assault that happened in September 2022.
The man was arrested Thursday, February 16, 2023 on the strength of two warrants for the following charges:
- Robbery with Violence
- Assault Cause Bodily Harm – Choking
- Aggravated Assault
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
On September 30, 2022, officers responded to a call for service and learned that a 65-year-old male victim had been taken to hospital after an attack by another male who was known to him. Through investigation a suspect was identified, and a warrant issued.
The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court today, February 17, 2023.
Assault Arrest
A 42-year-old Peterborough woman is facing charges after a domestic incident Thursday evening.
At approximately 9:00pm on February 16, 2023, officers were called to a residence. Upon arrival, officers learned there had been a verbal dispute between several members of a family and that it had escalated to a physical altercation.
As a result of the investigation, a 42-year-old Peterborough woman was arrested and charged with:
- Assault – Spousal
- Assault X2
The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court March 16, 2023.
